A Farewell at Sea | Where Love Meets the Horizon
There are moments in hospitality that move far beyond service. Moments that remind us why we do what we do. To create places that hold meaning, long after the suitcases are gone. Earlier this week, I witnessed one of those moments.
A FAREWELL AT SEA
As the first rays of light broke over the calm waters of North-West Lombok, we gathered quietly by the shore. Two of our boat captains, Pak Nengah and Acok, two close members of our team – Pak Hamdi and lovely Candra – and Mrs. M. – whose love story had become part of ours.
Years ago, she and her husband, Mr. S., discovered The Lombok Lodge Boutique Hotel together. It was a place that spoke to them both: the stillness, the warmth, the unpretentious beauty of the sea. Mr. S. final wish was to return here. Not in body, but in spirit.
7TH OF NOVEMBER
On the morning of November 7th, 2025, at approximately 8:30 – 9:00 AM, off the coast of West Lombok – 8°20′49.7″S | 116°07′16.8″E – , Mrs. M. honoured that wish. In a quiet Balinese Ngelarung ceremony, Mr. S. ashes were released into the Bali Sea – part of the great Western Pacific – to journey forever with the waves.
As we stood there, the sea was impossibly calm, as if holding its breath. The gentle sound of water against the hull, the fragrance of salt and frangipani, the morning light catching the surface. Everything felt suspended in sacred simplicity.
JUST LOVE
There were no grand gestures.
Just love. Pure, quiet, and infinite.
I read aloud a few words for Mr. S. & Mrs. M., written from my heart:
‘ … May S. drift upon timeless currents, his spirit carried by the waves, his memory alive in the rhythm of the ocean. Now, and for all the days to come …’
Mrs. M. stood beside me.
In that moment, I was reminded that hospitality is not only about places. It’s about people, and the journeys they take through them.
For me, this ceremony was not an event to host, but an act of guardianship. To honour love, to respect the sea, and to remember that our shores are not just for beginnings as engagements and wedding, but sometimes for beautiful endings too.
As Mr. S. now journeys with the tides, his story becomes part of our story and of beautiful Lombok.
Part of the rhythm of the ocean, part of all of us who call this island home.
And so, to Mr. S.: May love carry you on your journey, and may the sea embrace you with calm and endless grace.
With love,
